使用 Firefox 已经很久了，虽然其安全快速，但一直将其作为偏房看待，没将其扶到正室，仅作为测试网页兼容性的一个工具。原因主要是以下两点：

- Firefox 不支持 Alexa toolbar。对于 web 开发者来说，Alexa Rank 虽然毁誉参半，但直到今天，Alexa Rank 仍是在评价某个网站的价值时，一个不可替代的第三方评估指标。
- Firefox 不支持自动打开上次退出时所打开的网页，而基于 Internet Explorer 为内核的 Avant Browser 支持这个功能。－－这个特性对我非常重要。因为工作需要，我的浏览器经常同时打开几十个网页，我希望当碰到程序死机、程序重启、Windows 重启的场合，再次启动浏览器，能够自动打开上次的网页内容。
今天更新 Alexa toolbar 时，在 Alexa 的网站上查到一篇 FAQ 文章 http://www.alexa.com/site/help?index=127，讲道已经有办法在 FireFox 中显示 Alexa Rank：

While we do not have immediate plans to develop an Alexa Toolbar for the Firefox browser, all is not lost. You have some choices:
- Ask FireFox to include Alexa. In 1998, Alexa built a feature for both Netscape and Mozilla browsers called What's Related. Unfortunately that feature is not included in the FireFox browser. Write a note (http://www.mozilla.org/contact/) to the folks at Mozilla/Firefox to let them know you want Alexa AND FireFox.
- Build Your Own Alexa Toolbar. Because Firefox is an open source browser, an enterprising developer might make use of that functionality and our Web Information Services Feed to create such a Toolbar.
- Some developers have already built FireFox toolbars incorporating Alexa. You can find them here:
- SearchStatus. Quirk has built a small toolbar that shows Alexa Rank and Google PageRank.
- About This Site. Gina Trapani at scribbling.net built a handy plugin.
- SEO Toolbar. The Rankquest SEO Toolbar provides you quick access to many SEO tools including the Alexa Traffic Rank.
- Wyzo. If you would like to try a new browser based on Firefox, the Wyzo Media Browser comes pre-loaded with Alexa data via the SearchStatus extension.
这篇 FAQ 写得很有意思。Alexa 先象小媳妇一样委委屈屈地哭诉了一番，说在 1998 年就为 Netscapte & Mozilla 浏览器编译了 Alexa Toolbar 的功能，但是这个功能没有被加入到 Firefox中。Alexa 号召大家到 http://www.mozilla.org/contact/ 去向 Firefox 写信请愿，要求 Firefox 加入这个功能。:)
哈哈，Alexa 还真搞笑。他的第二个建议就是让用户自己编译 Firefox 的程序（因为Firefox 程序是开源的），以加入 Alex Toolbar Page Rank 的功能。这个就更搞了，普通用户谁懂这个？实际上，Firefox 的 add-ons 有统一的技术接口标准，Alexa 完全可以根据 Firefox add-ons 的设计规范，开发一个支持 firefox 的 alexa toolbar 来，但他却完全将责任推给了 Firefox 和 用户，连十年前(1998年)的程序都拿出来说事。实在是无语了。
好在最后 Alexa 说到已经有第三方的个人开发者开发了插件支持 Alexa toolbar。我从这个几个插件中比较了一下，找到了最简洁好用的一个：SearchStatus(http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/)。
SearchStatus 目前最新的 1.20 版本的下载安装地址是: http://www.quirk.biz/searchstatus/searchstatus-1.20.xpi。
安装结束后，会在 Firefox 的底部，分别显示 Google PageRank 和 Alexa Rank, 非常简洁方便，如下图所示：
2007-07-23 附注：
终于，Alexa 在这几天已经推出了 The Alexa Toolbar for Firefox，名字为 Sparky，可在 http://www.alexa.com/site/download/ 下载安装。我看了一下截图，与 SearchStatus 相差无几，但没有 SearchStatus 简洁，Toolbar 占据的屏幕空间比较多，我没有安装它。
截图如下。如图所见，可以看到，其在 Firefox 上加了一个菜单，这个比较讨厌。另外在底部的工具条很占地方。
安装完 SearchStatus 后，在网上搜索了一下，找到了一个叫 Session Manager(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2324)的 add-ons 插件，这个插件可以保存当前的网页地址，当关闭 Firefox 之后，下次重启之时，就会自动打开上次保存的网页地址。

拥有这两个插件之后，我就将 Internet Explorer 贬为偏室，将 Firefox 作为我的主流浏览器了。
